Texas Hold'em Path ยท Intro
At the Casino
House habits, so nothing catches you off guard.
- Getting a seat. Walk up to the poker room desk. Give your name and the game you want, like 1/2 No Limit. They call you when a seat opens.
- Buying in. Each game has a smallest and largest buy-in. Buy chips at the cage or from the dealer. Set your budget before you sit.
- Your turn only. You raised to 6 and Zofia called. After the flop she acts before you. Wait for her. Acting early gives away information and can change what others do.
- Words count. She checks. Your turn. In most rooms, what you say is binding. Say "bet 8" and you have bet 8.
- One motion. Push your chips out in one motion. Going back for more without saying the amount is a string bet. The dealer can hold you to the first stack.
- One big chip. Facing a bet, one chip bigger than the bet with no word counts as a call in most rooms. To raise, say "raise" first.
- Your cards. Keep your cards on the table where the dealer can see them. Rest a chip on top so they are not swept away by mistake.
- The rake. The turn gives you a straight. You bet, Zofia folds, and the 29 is yours, less the rake: the small cut the house takes from most pots. Here, 2.
- Tipping. In most US card rooms, players tip the dealer a little after winning a pot. It is a custom, not a rule.
- When in doubt. Ask the dealer. Rules differ by room, and dealers would rather explain than fix a mistake. Know when you will leave before you sit down.
Play money only. Room rules differ, so ask the dealer when in doubt.
